Florinda is betrothed to an ugly old man. Hellena is destined for a nunnery. Angellica intends to make her fortune by bestowing her love on the highest bidder. Things don’t turn out quite as planned…

Aphra Behn was the first professional female writer in England, and wrote frankly and amusingly about love and sex. Her plays were frowned upon in the less permissive eras that followed the Restoration, but their subtle take on sexual politics make them very appealing to modern audiences.
